Hongmaogang
Located on the edge of the south bank of the second wharf in Kaohsiung Harbor, Hongmaogang is now a small fishing village circumvented by the huge industrial park in southern Kaohsiung. It had been designated by Ministry of Transportation and Communications to be the Sixth Container Center of Kaohsiung Harbor. Also, because of serious pollution, as a result, the government had planned to move the entire village since 1968.
Currently all of the houses have been torn down, but some special facilities are kept, such as Da-lin Power Plant of Taiwan Power Company. Coal is transported from the sea to fuel the power plant. A huge blue transportation belt connects the cargo ships and the power plant. Looking from afar, the transportation belt is like a blue dragon lying in Hongmaogang. With a few more white and red chimneys, it totally brings out the feature of this place as a heavy industrial area.
Around the Second Wharf of Kaohsiung Harbor, there is a signal tower in the shape of the Chinese character “gao,” from which you can see another signal tower on the south end of Cijin’s. Ferries used to be operating here, but it is no longer the case now. Still, the ferry wharf is well-preserved up to this day.
